Flowering Modes

Simulating the Sun w/ an HPS 

This is more difficult than one would think; but we figured it out! Most traditional light bulbs produce only a narrow spectrum of light, great for reading, but horrible for plant growth. Plants need light in both the red & blue spectrum, & can benefit from light in the purple, yellow, orange & green spectrum as well. No single bulb can do this. Hence our amazing “Sea of Light” system; which combines a myriad of different lighting technologies together to achieve full spectrum lighting in the Magic Herb Garden product line!

The Magic Herb Garden uses several sets of lights in key positions to grow all types of culinary herbs, flowers, and vegetables all year long. The heart of the lighting system is the hugely over powerful 150w, high pressure sodium (HPS) located in the top, center of the unit. This monster puts out close 20,000 lumens in the red/orange range, and is fantastic for flowering growth. This means sweeter strawberry’s, tastier herbs and spicier peppers!

Fluorescent Lighting Systems

To round things off, we have included a set of TWO high-output compact fluorescent lighting systems, mounted in the ceiling of the unit (offset left and right). These lights produce an additional 15,000 lumens in the blue & red spectrum. Essential for healthy root and leaf development. Hugely important during the vegetative phase.

It All Begins With The Seed.
Thousands of tiny pepper seeds.

Seeds are the basis for all plant life. Ingrained in every seed shell, is a tiny seed embryo. It contains essentially a tiny version of a full grown plant. It has a small root, stem/stalk and a set of small leaves. Everything it needs to start it's life on earth as a plant.

The Seedling

The seedlings use gravity to direct and orient itself. It positions the root tip in a downward direction, while the leaves point up. The root penetrates the ground, and the leaves erect and absorb light. Plucked energy from the sky and soil (nutrient)..

For ease of use, the seeds are started in the provided pucks, which absorb moisture, and expand to allow growth. Rockwool cubes can also be used. The pucks absorb water, and expand, while holding oxygen and moisture. The porous inner material allows the tiny roots to take a foothold, and continue to grow.

Like a solar panel, the tiny leaves open to catch the sunlight. The light is exchanged into energy, and when combined with water and nutrients, the tiny plant can begin to rapidly grow and increase it's size.

Leaves Eat Too..

Leaves feed by opening the petiole to drink and breathe; almost like a human. Thousands of tiny mouths all over the plants leaves open to feed on water and breath oxygen.

In early development, leaves will often do the work that the roots will do later on in life. At first, the plant has to use all it's surface area to extract water. Later the root system will prove to be more efficient at this.

A Tiny Water Droplet Is Absorbed

Once the plant is developed enough, the entire root puck can be removed from the humidity chamber and placed into the main hydroponic system to continue growing. The first stage, known as the seedling stage is complete.

The Vegetative Stage

Here several small plants have developed from seedlings in the humidity chamber, and are being transplanted to larger surroundings; the primary hydroponic system.

Just pick up the entire puck, and transplant. Root system and everything is in a tiny little, transportable package! Simply insert to the waiting grow cup of the hydroponic system. That's it!

Under 18 hours of light, the vegetative stage has started. At this point, leaves can be plucked from herbs and other vegetative plants for eating and preparing.

The Flowering Stage

When you're ready to produce fruit, simply cut the light back to 12 hours a day.  You guessed it; this is the flowering stage! The plants will re-act by producing flowers, and beginning to develop fruit for you! Organic, fresh cherry tomatoes are just days away...

Aeroponics is the process of growing plants in an air/mist environment without the use of soil or an aggregate media. Aeroponic systems are favored over other methods of hydroponics because the increased aeration of nutrient solution delivers more oxygen to plant roots, stimulating growth and preventing pathogen formation.

The Hydroponically Grown Plant is the Clear Winner

Aeroponic plant growth is sustained by the intermittent spray of a hydro-atomized nutrient solution as it remains suspended in air. In a true hydroponic apparatus, the plant's root system is totally submerged in water ('hydro'); while growing geoponically requires the plant to naturally root itself in soil/ground ('geo').

In an aeroponic system, however, the plant is suspended into an enclosed air environment where the lower portion stem and roots protrude into a hydro-atomized nutrient solution and environment. The leaves and crown of the plant extended above into air. The root and crown of the plant are separated by the plant support structure. The lowest stem portion and root system are sprayed/misted for short durations with a hydro-atomized pure water/nutrient solution.

Here a common tulip is grown hydroponically. You can see the fast root development and vegetative production in about 29 days. The plant has gone from bulb to flowering in record setting time using hydroponics.

Air is responsible for providing oxygen to the plants, as well as small amounts of water vapor, and in our systems to force out hot air out. Keeping air moving over leaves, getting rid of the hot used air, and even cooling it down for your type of plant is something the Magic Herb Garden excels at. We control the climate.

The first thing to consider in any indoor growing environment is how to get the air into the unit. We accomplish this with a powerful, yet quiet, rear mounted intake fan. It's job is to bring cool air in from the rear of the machine, as well as to circulate the air around the volume of the unit. Fresh air means healthy plants.

Exhausting Heated Air

Usually, an excess of hot air is not good for plants. The heat generated from the bulb needs to get exhausted out of the growing environment as soon as possible, to keep desired temperatures in range. We all know hot air rises up. So above and behind the bulbs, we have mounted a powerful, but quiet exhaust fan to rid the system of any heat that is unwanted. The means temperatures stay moderate, despite using very bright lights. Bright lights mean green, vibrant plants! You have the best of both worlds. Bright light and little heat.

Co2 for Enhancing Plant Growth

In nature, plants breathe in co2, and exhale oxygen. Co2 is necessary for plant growth. The more of it there is in the air, the faster a plant will grow. Our designers have engineered a way to artificially elevate the co2 levels in the chamber to 1500 parts per million; nature is only 2-300 ppm. The ideal level to skyrocket plant growth. Available in the deluxe version is this powerful steroid for plants. But unlike in humans, co2 is perfectly healthy for plants.

Co2 essentially doubles the growth rate of any plant at any given time. So if two plants were grown in identical conditions, the one with elevated co2 will have grown about twice as fast, at the end of 30 days. Co2 alone dramatically increases plants performance, and growth rates. It is simple to use and perfectly safe to breathe - after all, we exhale co2 ourselves when breathing out. Plants love it.
